Who needs to comply and when?

The introduction of MTD for Income Tax is being phased in based on total self-employment and property income:

    From 6 April 2026

    Income over £50,000

For individuals with qualifying income above this threshold.

    From 6 April 2027

    Income over £30,000

The threshold lowers to bring more individuals into the digital system.

    From 6 April 2028

    Income over £20,000

The final planned threshold for the initial rollout phase.

These thresholds are based on total relevant income before expenses.

    What actually changes under MTD?

The transition to Making Tax Digital introduces three fundamental changes to how you manage and report your business finances.

    1. Digital Records

Paper records will no longer meet HMRC requirements. All business transactions must be recorded digitally using compatible accounting software or spreadsheets linked by API bridges.

    2. Quarterly Updates

Instead of a single annual tax return, you will need to send a summary of your business income and expenses to HMRC every three months directly through your software.

    3. Final Declaration

At the end of your accounting year, you will submit an End of Period Statement (EOPS) and a final declaration to tie everything together, claim reliefs, and finalise your tax position.

    Turning Compliance into Advantage

    Future-Proof Your Finances

While Making Tax Digital is a mandatory compliance change, it presents a fantastic opportunity to modernise your business. Moving to digital records shouldn't just be about keeping HMRC happy.

By embracing cloud accounting software as part of your MTD transition, you unlock real-time financial insights, automate tedious data entry, and gain a clearer, up-to-the-minute view of your business performance.
